How Much do the Mega-Rich Spend on Real Estate?
Have you ever wondered how much you would have to spend to own the most expensive house in your state, or even the country? We sure have. And though we run the risk of leaving you green with envy, we have compiled a list of the most expensive houses in each US state.
Using data from Trulia, we collected data on the price, type of home, number of bedrooms, total square footage, price per square foot, and the lot size for each of the most expensive houses in 2015. The most expensive house in the US is in East Hampton, New York, listed at a price of $140,000,000. The second and third most expensive are in Wasilla, Alaska ($119,500,000), and Fulshear, Texas ($115,000,000). The World-famous Sunset Boulevard is home to the most expensive house in California, available for a cool $85,000,000. Rounding out the list are the Dakotas, where you would need to shell-out about $2,900,000 to own the most expensive house in Deadwood, South Dakota, or Fargo, North Dakota.

How do these houses compare with the most expensive houses in the World? Well, it turns out that the most expensive house in the world is a 5-story penthouse complete with its own waterslide in Monaco. But when it comes to average home prices in the US, the top 10 most expensive markets are almost all located in California: the most expensive market is Los Altos (home of Apple, Google, and Facebook headquarters).
The data we have compiled includes the most expensive houses on the market at the time of writing. However, it is possible that some even more expensive homes are privately listed and not available for public viewing. One thing that is clear is that the house prices for the ultra-rich have been increasing over the past several years. But will these houses actually sell for their asking price? Could there be even more expensive homes that are privately listed?;
