Dishwasher Installation Costs

Indoor Cost Guides      Furniture Assembly & Installations      Dishwasher Installation Costs

A dishwasher installation is a fairly simple process. It will typically involve the removal of an old dishwasher unless you are installing for the first time or in new construction. This is a job that can be done by a handyman, a plumber, or an appliance installation technician and the costs will vary depending on who you choose to do the work.

You will need access to water and electrical lines for dishwasher installation. If those are not present, they will need to be installed accordingly. Some dishwashers are hard-wired to the house, but typically they are installed with an outlet plug for easy power cutoff in case of an emergency or electrical shortage. The dishwasher itself will be the bulk of the expense, as labor rates for appliance installation are fairly cheap.

Dishwasher installation: new installation of mid-range model in a kitchen.

Item Unit Cost Quantity Line Cost
Dishwasher: new unit, mid-range model. $400-$700 per unit 1 $400-$700
Dishwasher installation kit: includes hot and cold water hoses with all new fittings and necessary connectors. $30 per unit 1 $30
Delivery and haul away fees: some retailers include this with the purchase of a specific appliance or purchase amount. $0-$350 per service 1 $0-$350
Labor Cost (new installation) $50-$125 per hour 4 $200-$550
Total Cost $630-$1,630 per unit 1 $630-$1,630

Other considerations and costs

  • You should definitely take advantage of free delivery and haul away of your old dishwasher if you buy your new unit from a store that offers the service. This can save you up to $200, or more in some cases.
  • Chain stores only perform basic installations. If you need any extensive work, their vendor rates will increase substantially and they may not even be able to complete the job. Their free delivery service is nice, but it’s just as reasonable to call a handyman or appliance specialist on your own.
  • Always spend the money on an installation kit. Even if you don’t use all the components, there are some places that will refuse to install a dishwasher using existing hoses and accessories. Plus, it’s better for your investment if you just replace it all.

DIY considerations

  • If your current dishwasher is well-installed and has easy connections to the hot, cold, and drain lines, you might be able to replace it yourself. Keep in mind that electrical and plumbing work is required, so this could be a dangerous job if you aren’t familiar with wiring or appliance installation.
